The genesis of Bangalore Airport goes way back to Year 1972 when a humble beginning was made appointing Bangalore Airport as Customs airport for unloading aircraft parts etc. The present air cargo complex evolved out of the Bangalore airport and came into existence on 2^nd September 1983 for facilitating imports and exports. Initially the cargo facility was mostly utilized by major public sector undertaking viz., M/s.HAL, HMT, ITI, ISRO, BEL etc, as during those days Bangalore was the hub of PSU’s. Gradually the industrial base of Bangalore expanded and soon it became the IT Capital of India, also popularly called as Silicon valley of India. The growth of air cargo complex has been concomitant with the growth of IT in Bangalore (the growth has been phenomenal in terms of volume of work for air cargo for both export & import in the past 5 years). A major development in the functioning of air cargo took place with the introduction of EDI from 19^th Nov 1998. Currently all export /import processing are done on EDI. Bangalore now has a distinct presence on the International cargo map for imports and exports. M/s.AISATS and M/s.Menzies Bobba are the authorized custodians of all the import/export cargo under section 45 of the Customs Act 1962. Further, the EDI operations at Air Cargo Complex have been shifted from ICES Version 1.0 to ICES Version 1.5 with effect from 21-08-2010.
