The Indian Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) Programme, administered by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) since 2011, is an initiative aimed at bolstering the security and facilitation of the burgeoning volume of international trade goods. The enrolment and participation in this program by eligible stakeholders is voluntary. This program encompasses three tiers of certification for both exporters and importers: AEO T1, AEO T2, and AEO T3, with AEO T3 representing the highest level of accreditation. Currently, the program boasts nearly 5,000 AEO entities that have collaborated with Indian Customs to ensure safety and security within the supply chain. In return, these entities receive a range of benefits from Indian Customs, including expedited cargo processing and clearance, deferred duty payments, direct port delivery/entry, and mutual recognition agreements (MRAs) with other countries. The Indian AEO Programme has significantly enhanced the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of goods movement through Indian ports. To align with international best practices, CBIC has fully digitized the application filing, processing, and delivery of AEO certification.
